A [[Zwaardemaker olfractometer]], a type of tube by which an odorant was introduced into the nose. The amount of odour being calibrated by the length of the tube. This was a device developed in 1888 by the Dutch physiologist, [[Hendrick Zwaardemaker]] who also developed the [[Zwaardemaker smell system]].

This was the standard, apparatus for determining olfactory thresholds. The apparatus consists of a short pipe, made of odorless kaolin (a kind of clay), which can be placed in the nose. To prevent outside smells interfering, the odorants are held within a metal cylinder.
