The zona incerta is a small region of gray matter that is part of the subthalamus. This nucleus is located medially to the internal capsule, ventral to the thalamus, and is contiguous with the Thalamic reticular nucleus. This nucleus separates the lenticular fasciculus from the thalamic fasciculus. This region receives widespread input from the cerebral cortex and cerebellum, and sends outputs back to the cortex. Its functions, however, remain largely unknown.
