Word frequency is the statistical probability of a specific word appearing in a language. Word frequency has been shown to be associatedted with performance in word recognition, verbal memory and semantic memory tasks.
With the use of powerful computers it is an easy matter in computational linguistics to generate word frequency lists of written language, but it is still difficult and time consuming to develop such lists for spoken language.
