The concept of successful aging has been widely studied within various disciplines and several models have been developed and empirically tested. However, there is no commonly accepted definition. Models are predominantly researcher driven and can be summarised as criteria models or process models. Several studies have identified the importance of identifying older people’s own perceptions and meanings of successful aging. Issues such as culture and value systems play an important role in the definition of successful aging.
