Social deprivation is a form of deprivation in which people are disadvantaged and have restricted access to social resources. This would include being able to have contact with friends and family, being able to actively participate or even belong to social groups pursuing hobbies and interests etc. This may be due to a number of factors such as mental disorder, povery, lack of public transport, social discrimination etc.
The concept is different from that of cultural deprivation, being less concerned with the formal, public aspects of a societies cultural provision and concentrating more on the informal and private aspects. There is, however, an area of overlap where it is sometimes difficult to know which term to apply.
Effects of social deprivation on children
Because we are social creatures and because social skills are to some degree learnt then social deprivation can have far reaching consequences on child social development.
