Short term dynamic psychotherapy(STDP) was developed in an attempt to shorten treatment times while working out of the theory and practices of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy

Subsequent developments have led to the development of Experiential Dynamic Therapy which acts as a portmanteau term for a number of new therapies drawing on the theory and practice of STDP itself. These include intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (iSTDP), experiential Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy eSTDP, Accelerated Experiential-Dynamic Psychotherapy(AEDP) and (Accelerated Empathic Therapy) (AET) .
