Secondary process is the psychoanalytic term for an ego based conscious or preconscious mode of mental functioning based on the reality principle. This activity is marked by [[bound energy], logical thinking and the tendency to delay gratification by regulation of actions based on instinctual demands.

Freud developed the concept early and dealt with it most effectively in The Interpretation of Dreams (Chapter7)
