Schizophrenia is found approximately equally in men and women, though the onset tends to be later in women, who also tend to have a better course and outcome.

Average rates for men and women are similar, although the mean age of onset is about 5 years greater in women (hence a lower female rate in adolescence), with a second smaller peak after the menopause.
