The rumor intensity formula was developed by Gordon Allport and L. Postman and reflects the pattern for rumors to develop as a function of the importance of the information and its ambiguity.

R=ia
where R is the intensity of the rumor
i = importance
a = ambiguity
Where either a or i is zero there is no rumor.
