The notion of the real self can have a number of connotations.

  • In psychology the real self may be thought of as the objective self that others would recognise from everyday life. This is often compared with the ideal self
  • The Real self theory in politics and philosophy proposes that people often have a private "real will" (or real self), that is different from their public "expressed will".
