Psychosocial readjustment is a term similar to psychosocial rehabilitation indicating the acquisition of new attitudes, skills etc that will enable people to function in their social setting. Where people requiring rehabilitation have been institutionally removed from and then returned to society, adjustment implies that people are recovering from other forms of psychosocial change requiring them to adapt. An example might be of a woman who has nursed an aged mother who has subsequently died. She may need treatment to help in adjusting to her new freedom or to develop a social life for herself.
Many of the psychotherapeutic techniques used in the two areas overlap with the emphasis on counseling and behavior modification.
