Early intervention in psychosis has been shown to have important long term consequences on the course of the condition. Much of the work has been done in the context of schizophrenia.
The idea that we can detect and preventatively treat people who may be inclined to develop psychosis was first proposed by Harry Stack Sullivan in 1927:
The great number of our patients have shown for years before the break, clear signs of coming trouble ... I gfeel certain that many incipiant cases might be arrested before the efficient contact with reality is completely suspended, and a long stay in institutions made necessary
