It is important to understand that from an evolutionary point of view animal feeding behavior, digestion and metabolism have developed together. If we take a crocodile it has a very slow digestion and slow metabolism that means it only has to feed infrequently, while if we take mammals their digestive system is faster, their metabolism quicker and they have to find food more often.
