Service UsersEdit

One of our main aims with this project is for the project to be useful to people with personal experiences of mental health difficulties, their friends, family or carers.

Personal ExperiencesEdit

The purpose of the Personal Experiences will be to share our stories relating to mental health with others, who may have had similar experiences but not met anyone else who has had them. They are also intended to be useful to psychologists to try and gain insight into peoples experiences. They will be totally anonymous, confidential, and can be removed at any time should the contributor wish it so.

Getting StartedEdit

GeneralEdit

The academic use of the siteEdit

While the site is still in draft form it is not really suitable to be used as referenced academic source. We hope this willl change as we develop a system of academic oversight and peer review. In the meantime the following articles address some of the issues involved.

Sydney University Library links to the Psychology WikiEdit

I noticed that Sydney University library is linking to material from the Psychology Wiki[1] which I hope is a sign of the growing acceptance of the academic value of the site Dr Joe Kiff 21:40, January 11, 2010 (UTC)

Seasons greetings to our usersEdit

At the end of 2009 we can see that we have had over 2,400,000 unique visitors from 226 countries and territories who have accessed over 5,250,000 pages this year. We hope you have found our information helpful and that some of you will feel moved to help us in building this resource in the New Year. Dr Joe Kiff 00:25, January 1, 2010 (UTC)

Editing statisticsEdit

Just looking at the site statistics I noticed that we have just reached the milestone of over 100,000 edits on the site. Over 400 people have now provided edits.Dr Joe Kiff 18:12, November 25, 2009 (UTC)

Usage updateEdit

As of this week 2 million unique visitors have used this site this year, and we are currently approaching 100,000 users a week. Dr Joe Kiff 00:44, November 20, 2009 (UTC)

Negotiations with the British Psychological SocietyEdit

At the end of the first iteration of the material on the Wiki we are currently looking to affiliate the site with national psychological societies in order to facilitate professional approval and oversight of our material, and to help develop a structured and comprehensive upgrade of the material. Please remember that the current structure uses the pages of Wikipedia as placeholders and there is much work to be done in the future to develop the material to academic standards. We have had very positive meetings with the BPS and the signs are good that they will seek to integrate the site into their portfolio of services. Dr Joe Kiff 08:00, September 26, 2009 (UTC)

Academic homeEdit

As we move towards the end of the first draft of the site we are now looking for an academic home for the Psychology Wiki to provide support for the further development of the site. We are currently in discussions with the Psychology Department at Birmingham University, one of the premier research departments in the UK.

User activity figures for 2008Edit

So the figures for 2008 have been gathered together and we have quadrupled our visitor numbers over last year. 2008 figures are:

  • Visitors - 1,131,276,
  • Page views - 2,342,780,
  • on average people read 2 pages while on the site and
  • they spent 2 minutes looking at material.
You can keep track of this data on the Google Analytics report and you can click through yourself (just follow the instructions on tthe page) to see maps showing that we were contacted from almost every country in the world and that a growing number of people are contacting us using mobile phones and means other than computer. Dr Joe Kiff 12:14, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

First anniverary for the Psychology WikiEdit

The wiki has been in operation for a year now. In that time we have created 22,365 pages and developed 13,310 articles and made over 32,000 edits and accumulated over 66MB of material. This shows how easy the software is to use. We estimate that we are about half way through the task of creating a page for each term in the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms and developing a solid knowledge structure upon which we can build.Dr Joe Kiff 18:35, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

YouTube comes to the Psychology WikiEdit

We can now embed YouTube videos into articles. See our YouTube listings for our current offerings and the instructions for linking to YouTube video clips if you have film you would like to include.Dr Joe Kiff 14:23, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

New featured article by Gregg HenriquesEdit

Gregg Henriques, author of the Tree of Knowledge System, has written a special introductory article for The Psychology Wiki which we have developed into a featured article. The Tree of Knowledge System/Expert article by Gregg Henriques is the first of a series of expert articles written for the wiki. Please comment on the paper on the paper's talk page. For a more in-depth exchange on the ToK, you can go to the ToK Discussion Forum. The wiki lends itself to direct and immediate feedback on new work and we hope it will stimulate quality debate. Call for childhood experiencesEdit

One of our users Prof Dolph Kohnstamm is publishing a book called, "I am I: Sudden flashes of self-awareness in Childhood". He is calling for accounts of similar experiences from the users of our site in order to further his researches. He has put a number of the chapters of his book up on his user page as pdfs for your interest and enjoymentDr Joe Kiff - User:Lifeartist (talk) 14:55, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Psychology Wiki voted wiki of the monthEdit

We have been voted wiki of the month (September 2006) at Wikia. With the recent publicity they have been receiving it is a good time to be voted in. Jaywin.

NEW: UniversitiesEdit

Check out our new Universities page. If you are studying psychology at University you might like to add your university to our Universities page, a list of institutions offering psychology courses at degree level.

You can link your psychology department's homepage there, and use the University/Newman College example to build up a resource for your fellow students and staff for course & subject material.

It is also possible to create pages on staff members, research fellows and lecturers, with links to their academic homepages and areas of research. Create your institution wiki article today and get your University on the map!

NeuroWikiEdit

I'd like to let you all know about NeuroWiki. Unlike Wikipedia, NeuroWiki is not an encyclopaedia or textbook containing settled knowledge, but is rather a wiki discussion forum about neuroscience research, especially systems, theoretical, and cognitive neuroscience. ..... Bayle Shanks 23:19, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Move to formal signaturesEdit

After internal debate we are agreed that to be consisitent with the tone of an academic/professional site that we should encourage people to sign with their formal titles and names, {as we would if publishing in a journal} rather than use nicknames. People can use pseudomyms if they must but we feel it is likely that material will be given more authority with a public name. People including their experiences will be able to remain anonymous by the use of pseudomyms. Existing contributors can edit their signiture using the details on Psychology Wiki For Beginners #Fancy signatures

New Navigation TemplatesEdit

All of the navigation templates have been updated, so that instead of a template on the right hand side of the screen, the new navigation templates are similar to the template {{Browsebar}} that has been on Guidepages for quite a while now. Hopefully this improves the layout of the site and its ease of use. If you see a navigation template that is not at the top of the page, please move it to the top. Mostly Zen Baby tao (talk) 20:20, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Many New Members - CommunicationEdit

Today was a busy day on the Psychology Wiki. At one point there were too many contributors editing at once for people to be able to keep up. This is normal on Wikipedia, but our Wiki is more village sized, so here are some useful links to keep in touch:

Mostly Zen Baby tao (talk) 21:40, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Tasks To Do ListEdit

Linked to from the bottom of each panel in the Tasks to Do Portal; the Tasks to Do List is our general list of things to do, which replaces the discussion previously found at the Community Portal talk page. If you edit the tasks to do list, it will automatically update the Tasks to do in the General Discussion Forum and the Main Articles for each of the 6 Major tasks.

Please add to the To Do list, or mark tasks as completed, when you have done so. Mostly Zen Baby tao (talk) 21:59, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Tutorial is up and runningEdit

Our new Tutorial is up and running and should help new users and contributors to find editing the wiki to be far more user friendly. This is part of a general clean up of all of our articles in the Help Category. See Also Category:Help. Mostly Zen Baby tao (talk) 15:32, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Redesign for Tasks To Do PortalEdit

The Tasks to DO portal has been totally redesigned, to focus on the 6 key tasks of Improving Articles, Featuring Articles, Copying Articles, Improving Structure, Creating New Articles and Attracting New Contributors. This last item is especially important as it is only with the help of the Psychology Community that this project will succeed in its aims. Mostly Zen Baby tao (talk) 17:50, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Redesign for Community PortalEdit

The Community Portal looks very different now, and is currently in the process of a revitalisation. Also this news feed has been added to the Current events section as well as being placed at the bottom of the community portal. Mostly Zen 17:46, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Very cool design! Useful information. Go on!

User ExperiencesEdit

We have had our first few User Experiences submitted recently, mainly relating to depression type experiences. See User Experiences and the Depression Experiences Index for details.

Google analytics reportEdit

A current Google analytics report on site activity is now available. For details go to the Google Analytics report page.

Article for ImprovementEdit

We have copied much information to the site and are already the 5th Largest Wikia overall. At this point it might be a good idea to take stock and clean up one article to an excellent standard, so that it can be used as an advertisement for the potential of the Psychology Wiki, in order to attract more interest, as well as as an example for how to lay out future articles.

Following discussion with Lifeartist, we thought that the best article to do this for would be Depression. So... we need to make Depression and all directly related links really, really good. If we work together it shouldn't be too hard. Have a look at the style we are aiming for and make use of the discussion page for clinical depression to see what we are trying to do.

New Design for the Main PageEdit

New users are editing the Main Page, Community Portal and Site map to make the goals and structure of the Psychology Wiki more clear.

Awareness and Attracting Contributors Edit

  • Being only 5 months old, the Psycholgy Wiki is still in its Sensorimotor stage.
  • Raising awareness of the project is important at this time.
  • Please tell anyone you know who may be interested about this project.
  • Templates of emails to send are here.
