Primary process is the psychoanalytic term for an unconscious irrational mode of mental functioning based on the pleasure principle. This activity is marked by the free discharge of energy and excitation without regard to the demands of environment, reality, or logic.

Freud developed the concept early and dealt with it most effectively in The Interpretation of Dreams (Chapter7)
