Physical activity is any activity in the physical systems of the body that result in energy expenditure. Generally as a physiological system the body operates at its basal metabolic rate using calories to maintain the basic physical activity level. Additional movement requires additional metabolic activity, strenuous exercise, the most.

Set point

Work at Portsmouth University looking at the eating and activity patterns of children has recently suggested that calorie expenditure may occur around a set point which is characteristic of an individual, and may be difficult to alter {citation needed}. So children who could exercise at school did little physical activity in the evening, while those who had limited oppurtunity in the day, caught up in the evening, but all to a level that was relatively constant for each child. The work suggests physical activity level is under is under genetic control with obvious implications for obesity and weight control.
