Paternal infanticideis an aspect of infanticide (zoology) and occurs where fathers eat their own offspring. When young bass hatch from the spawn, the father guards the area, circling around them and keeping them together, as well as providing protection from would-be predators. After a few days, most of the fish will swim away. At this point the male's behavior changes: instead of defending the stragglers, he treats them as any other small prey, and eats them.<ref name ="Edgar">M. A. Elgar and Bernard J.
