Secondary parkinsonism is where parkinson's -like symptoms are produced due to factors other than the disease processes underlying Parkinsons' Disease. Major reasons for secondary parkinsonism are stroke, encephalitis, narcotics, toxins such as manganese or carbon monoxide poisoning, traumatic brain injury, and normal pressure hydrocephalus and psychiatric medication.
Adifferential diagnosis can be facilitated by use of a DAT scan.
