Parental permissiveness is the degree which parents allow their children freedom to make their own decisions and take responsibility for their own lives. Complete permissiveness can amount to childhood neglect, while on the other hand overparenting or parental authoritarianism can have negative consequences in the other direction. It follows that a balance needs to be struck consistent with the childs age and abilities.
