The overjustification effect is the effect of giving someone an incentive (monetary or otherwise) to do something that they already enjoy doing. As a result, the person may then view his or her actions as externally controlled rather than intrinsically appealing. According to the Self-perception theory, people undergo overjustification effect because this would undermine their self-perception that they do it because they actually like it.
