Mutism is and may be related to or confused with:
- Lalophobia - is the irrational fear of speaking or of trying to speak.
- Elective mutism - a in which a person who is normally capable of speech is unable to speak in given situations
- Speech disorder - a type of communication disorders where 'normal' speech is disrupted. This can mean stuttering, lisps, etc. Someone who is totally unable to speak due to a speech disorder is considered mute.
