Metapsychology (Greek: meta, "beyond, transcending", and ψυχολογία, "psychology")[1] has two distinct meanings.

Psychoanalytic metapsychologyEdit

Psychoanalytic metapsychology is concerned with the fundamental assumptions of psychoanalytic theory.[1] ,the work of the Freudian analytic school and the subsequent development of object relations. This is the meaning emphasised by the APA thesaurus

Philosophical study of psychologyEdit

Metapsychology, as a speculative philosophy, is a systematic attempt to discern and describe what lies beyond the facts and laws of psychology, such as the relations between body and mind or concerning the place of the mind in the universe.[2]
