Life lines stem from a neuro-linguistic programming principle that in order to perform some kinds of inner exploration with full commitment, one must let go of various limits and beliefs that are needed day-to-day, and which may be dangerous or psychologically difficult to set aside.

Accordingly one deliberately sets up a process or a personal ritual to safely set those aside, with the intent of "picking them up " again upon completion.

As such they could be characterized as a psychologically healthy ritual, or a conscious use of the placebo effect.
