The lemniscal system is a polysynaptic pathway that ascends through the reticular formation projecting to the diencephalon.
It consists of a number of structures:
- Lateral lemniscus - running through the medulla and pons carrying fibres to the auditory system
- Medial lemniscus - moves through the medulla and pons carrying somatosensory fibres
- Spinothalamic tracts
- Trigeminal lemniscus - carries afferent fibres from the trigeminal nerve to the thalamus
