As the pressure to provide open access to journals grows some publishers, particularly those in the private sector are now charging authors to pay a fee so there work can be on open access.

Reports (to be) confirmed are that Elsevier will be offering their authors the option to pay a sponsorship fee to ensure that their article, already accepted for publication, is made freely available to non-subscribers via ScienceDirect. The fee for article sponsorship is $3,000. Some of their physics journals are the first to offer this option

The Public Library of Science is reported to have lost nearly $1 million in the last year. In response PloS is planning to raise its charges from $1500 towards $2500.

The for-profit open access publisher BioMed Central raised its author's charges last year towards $1700.
