[edit] Introduction

The Psychology Wiki is intended to be of use to all with an interest in psychology and its application in improving our lives. Although most of the contributors will be students, professionals and academics, many of the users of the site may not have formal psychology training.

Here at Psychology Wiki we recognize that individuals whom are experiencing (or have experienced) a mental illness can contribute in important ways, as feeling the symptoms of depression can be very different than reading about them. Even though a clinical psychologist may have spent years learning about conditions such as Acquired Brain Injury or Schizophrenia, it is very different to experience them. Additionally, an individual whose partner or relative (for example) has/had a mental illness can contribute in many ways as well. Their perspective is very valuable. The effect of living with a mentally ill individual has been the subject of many studies, and continues to interest mental health professionals.

Because of these reasons, and many not mentioned here, individuals without formal training have a valuable contribution to make here, and are most welcome. A secondary, but equally important aspect of the Psychology Wiki will be to include experiences of people who use psychology services.

In this way, other people who may have had similar experiences, either themselves or through a family member can learn greatly from your contribution. It also allows the professionals and academics (as well as trainees and students) a way to gain insight into the subjective experience.
