Geriatric dentistry or gerodontics is the delivery of dental care to older adults involving the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of problems associated with normal aging and age-related diseases as part of an interdisciplinary team with other health care professionals.

From a psychological point of view it is an area allied to special needs dentistry where the cognitive effects of aging need to be taken into account in terms of facilitating and monitoring oral health behavior, providing dental health education, and helping people deal with dental fear etc. Obviously someone suffering from severe dementia may well forget to clean their teeth and may not understand the context of a visit to the dentist and may be quite fearful of the experience. As a consequence they will require skilled and sympathetic clinical management.
