The Fundus is a round shaped part of the stomach located in the left portion of the stomach, and is marked off from the remainder of the stomach's body by a plane passing horizontally through the Cardiac Orifice.

Function

The Fundus allows an accumulation of stomach gasses that are produced by chemical digestion. The Fundus also stores undigested food for up to 1 hour.

Meanings of the Word

In Latin, Fundus means bottom. In medicine, Fundus is an anatomical term referring to the portion of an organ opposite from it's opening, so it refers to the bottom or the base of the organ. Even though, the word Fundus means bottom it is located in the upper portion of the body.
