The final common path was the term C. S. Sherrington gave to the lower motor neurons of the spinal cord and cranial nerve nuclei in their role as the final destination in the process of making decisions about movement. For whatever the higher processes are in the decision making tree, whether synaptic reflexes or more complicated conscious thoughts, in the end the motor neurons must be involved to effect movement - hence they are the final common path.
