A Zwaardemaker olfractometer, a type of tube for regulating the amount of a gaseous odorant as it is introduced into the nose. The amount of odour being calibrated by the length of the tube. This was a device developed in 1888 by the Dutch physiologist, Hendrick Zwaardemaker who also developed the Zwaardemaker smell system.
This was the standard, apparatus for determining olfactory thresholds. The apparatus consists of a short pipe, made of odorless kaolin (a kind of clay), which can be placed in the nose. To prevent outside smells interfering, the odorants are held within a metal cylinder.
