Family systems theory or family systems model is an approach that views the family as a system and adapts elements of systems theory as the basis of an approach to family therapy known as family systems therapy.

History

By the mid-1960s, a number of distinct schools of family therapy had emerged. From those groups that were most strongly influenced by cybernetics and systems theory, there came MRI Brief Therapy, and slightly later, strategic therapy, Salvador Minuchin's Structural Family Therapy and the Milan systems model of Mara Selvini Palazzoli and his team.
