Epicritic sensibility was a term given in 1905 by Henry Head to the perceptual discrimination afforded by the cutaneous receptors lying close to the skin's surface, mediating fine discriminations in each modality.

The term was later expanded by W H Rivers in 1908 to include the notional sensitivity to the output of the higher mental processes the epicritic functions
