Environmental adjustment is the shifting of physiological or biological systems to take account of aspects of the physical environment so as to reduce long term stress and to enable better performance under new conditions. An example would be thermal acclimatization where an organism adapts over a period of time to new climatic conditions.

Processes of natural selection can also mediate the environmental adaptation of entire species to changing conditions through genetic mechanisms.
