An enkephalin is a pentapeptide ending with either leucine ("leu") or methionine ("met"). Both are products of the proenkephalin gene.
- [Met]-enkephalin is Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met.
- [Leu]-enkephalin has Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Leu.
Enkephalins play many roles in regulating pain.
