Energy expenditure concerns the amount of mental or physical effort expended on a task or activity.

All organism have to maintain their core metabolic processes so use up energy at a relatively uniform rate known as Basal Metabolic Rate

Additional activities then have to be allowed for on top of this and most organisms have systems in place to provide energy to fuel movement, hunting, sexual exertion etc. About 70% of a human's total energy expenditure is due to the basal life processes within the organs of the body. About 20% of one's energy expenditure comes from physical activity and another 10% from thermogenesis, or digestion of food.[How to reference and link to summary or text] All of these processes require an intake of oxygen along with coenzymes to provide energy for survival (usually from macronutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) and expel carbon dioxide, which is explained by the Krebs cycle.

Energy expenditure is measured in calories.
