He was instrumental in the formalisation of Ellis' model of personality while coauthoring Ellis's only college textbook - Theories of Personality: Critical Perspectives. After Ellis' death Abrams continued Ellis' work on Sexuality taking an evolutionay perspective to love and intimacy. In his early career Abrams was among the first non-gay psychologists to volunteer to work with people with AIDS at the Gay Men's Health Crisis in 1985 - documented in his co-authored book How to Cope with a Fatal Illness.
