Dihydroxytryptamine is modified tryptamine and comes in a number of forms.

5,7-dihydroxytryptamineEdit

5,7-dihydroxytryptamine is tryptamine substituted with two hydroxyl groups in positions 5 and 7. It is a neurotoxic serotonin analog that preferentially destroys serotonergic neurons and is used in neuropharmacology as a tool. For example when injected into the amygdala of rats serotonin was depleted by approximately 80%, with other transmitters unaffected.

5,6-dihydroxytryptamineEdit

5,6-dihydroxytryptamine is tryptamine substituted with two hydroxyl groups in positions 5 and 6. It too is a neurotoxic serotonin analog that destroys serotonergic neurons and is used in neuropharmacologic research.
