Progress has been made in identifying the brain structures and processes associated with depression using a variety of functional imaging strategies


Generally studies show that depressed patients have striking bilateral and frontal hypometabolism in the inferior frontal lobe when compared with matched nondepressed patients.

Further studies of the anterior insula show hypometabolism in unipolar depressed patients but hypermetabolism in bipolar patients
