Dementia is the loss of mental capacity to a level where normal social and occupational roles can no longer be maintained due to cognitive decline. Widespread loss of memory, reasoning and judgement and their accompanying effects upon personality and social skills are characteristic signs.

Dementia is sometimes devided into Presenile and senile dementia
