A deimatic display is a display made by an animal to ward of predators. As an example of this evolutionary strategy the hawkmoth caterpillar can display marks on its ventral surface, when disurbed, that resemble the eyes and head of a snake. Many moths and butterflies have similar eye spots on their wings that are displayed prominently when they are threatened.
