Psychological containment is an aspect of resilience and refers to the capacity to internally manage the troubling thoughts and feelings and behavior that arise as a consequence of stress.

It is a concept that was developed within the psychoanalytic tradition by Wilfred Bion. It is said that his experience as a tank commander in World War II underpinned the formulation of the ides [citation needed].

As a therapeutic in psychotherapyEdit

In psychotherapy it may be seen as a therapeutic outcome to increase a persons ability to tolerate their feelings, say of guilt and shame, and in so doing to build self esteem and self confidence
