It should be noted that, in general, the conclusion after decades of research is that there is still no convincing evidence that any established psychotherapy is more effective than any other (Bergin and Garfield (2004)
Once the efficacy of a particular approach has been established compared to placebo and non treatment conditions it is reasonable to ask how it compares to other approaches.

As the results of individual comparison studies accumulate it then becomes possible to do meta-analyses of groups of studies looking at efficacy and effect size etc.
