A child protection conferences bring together people from different professions and organisations so they can all contribute to the discussion and subsequent decisions. They child psychologists, social workers, the GP, the health visitor, teachers and other professionals are likely to be involved . Usually, the child's parents are invited and, where the child is of sufficient age and understanding, the child too.

The purpose of the conference is to build up a picture of the child's life and to decide on what further action is required to safeguard and promote the child's welfare. If it is thought that there is a continuing risk, the conference will put together a child protection plan to keep the child safe.
