Catecholamine neurons constitute only a small proportion of all neurons. Of the 10 billion neurons in the brain perhaps only 2 million use the catecholamines as neurotransmitters. However these neurons are characteristically heavily branched so for example each dopminergic neuron in the rats substantia nigra may have 500,000 boutons in the neostriatum.
