The British Ability Scales - BAS are a measure of cognitive functioning used in work with children in the age range of 21/2-18. It is divided into two sections : Early Years and School Age.
The BAS returns an initial composite score, based on six scales, that reflects general cognitive abilities (GCA) with three embedded scores measuring: Verbal ability, pictorial and non-verbal reasoning ability and spatial ability. A further 7 scales can be employed if furher investigation is required.

The tester uses age-related start points and decision points to focus on the individuals ability range and terminates the scale as soon as sufficient information is gathered so minimising testing time and fatigue.
