It has been shown that the bodies neuroendocrine system responds to psychological variables such as stress. It has also been shown that endocrine changes effect immunological competence. Psychneuroimmunology is the field of study that draws this knowledge together to illuminate the mechanisms mediating the effect of psychological factors on aspects of immunological functioning.
