Avoidant behaviour is conduct aiming at reducing or avoiding stress, particularly in social situations. By implication the term indicates behaviour beyond the everyday appropriate, adaptive repetiore. Examples would be the avoidance of work involving people, preference for social isolation, reluctance to engage in intimate relationships for fear of being shamed etc.
Where the behaviour is pronounced and pervasive then it can amount to an avoidant personality disorder.
