People with irritable bowel syndrome, which involves embarrassing bodily symptoms, often feel stigmatised by others and this can impact on their willingness to seek treatment and to involve themselves with others, either socially or intimately

Unfortunately, research also shows that others, including members of the medical profession, sometimes hold negative attitudes towards people with irritable bowel symptoms.
