Anna Gillingham(1878-1963) was an American educator and psychologist who worked with Samuel Orton and they introduced a phonetic approach to the teaching of reading called the Orton-Gillingham method..
Based on a systematic and orderly approach of categorizing and teaching a set of 70 phonograms, single letters and letter pairs representing the 44 discrete sounds (or phonemes) found in English it was a popular method of remedial reading teaching in English.
Working with Dr. Orton, she trained teachers and compiled and published instructional materials.
