The ancient mariner effect (aka passing stranger effect) is the tendency for subjects to be more willing to self disclose to strangers rather than to acquaintances. It is called this after the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in which the sailor repeatedly tells his dreadful story to strangers
